What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase charging?

Your electrical connection consists of one or three phases.

  • Single-phase charging uses one phase. You can then draw less power from your connection.

  • Three-phase charging uses three phases. At the same current, you can get up to three times more power, so you charge faster.

Whether you can actually charge on three phases depends on your connection, your charging station and your car. If your car has a single-phase on-board charger, it will also charge on a single phase at a three-phase charging station.
