What is bidirectional charging or V2G?

With bidirectional charging, electricity can flow in two directions: from the grid to your car, but also from your car back to the grid. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) literally means "from the vehicle to the grid".

Why is this interesting?

  • Electric cars can store surplus energy that has been produced and give it back later. This helps keep the grid better balanced, for example when there is little wind or in winter, when solar panels produce less.

  • During a power cut, your car's battery can supply your household with some electricity for a while.

  • You could sell surplus electricity to the grid or to third parties.

Can I already charge bidirectionally today?

No. Bidirectional charging cannot be implemented yet today, because a clear legal framework is still lacking. There are also still technical hurdles:

  • It requires expensive DC charging stations.

  • The inverters in most electric cars cannot (yet) send electricity back to the grid.

  • The control of V2G has not yet been standardised.

Want to charge smartly today? Then a regular smart AC charging station is the right choice.
