Going on a trip with your electric car? These tips will help your journey go more smoothly.
Before you leave
Plan your route in advance and check that your charge card works at the charge points along your route.
Use a navigation or charging app that takes charge points and your car's range into account.
Expect a shorter range in high temperatures.
If you like, check how busy the fast charging stations along your route usually are, for example via Google reviews.
Driving abroad in a company car? Read your employer's fleet policy first.
Driving efficiently on the way
Use ECO mode if your car has one.
Drive a little slower on the motorway: an EV uses much more energy at higher speeds.
Use the air conditioning in moderation. Seat ventilation uses less energy than cooling the whole car.
Check your tyre pressure regularly and leave unnecessary luggage and roof boxes at home.
Charging on the way
Only use fast charging when you really need to, especially in hot weather. Fast charging generates a lot of heat; AC charging (up to 22 kW) is gentler on your battery.
Charge to around 80% instead of 100%. That is better for your battery and faster.
Avoid the busy midday peak between 12:00 and 14:00: charge before noon or after 14:00 instead.
Problems with a public charge point? Contact the operator: the number is on the charge point itself. Charging apps often also show whether a charge point is out of service.
During a break
Park in the shade or in a covered or underground car park. A sunshade behind the windscreen also helps.
On very hot days, let your car cool down for a while before driving on: switch it on, let the battery management do its job (with the air conditioning on, if needed) and wait a few minutes.
