Where you charge makes a big difference to what you pay. From cheapest to most expensive:
At the office: usually the cheapest. Our blog calculates with around €0.22 per kWh (excl. VAT).
At home: depends on your energy contract. Our blog calculates with around €0.40 per kWh (incl. VAT).
Public AC charging (up to 22 kW): slightly more expensive than at home. Example from our blog: around €0.42 per kWh at a charge point in Antwerp.
Public DC fast charging: the most expensive. Example from our blog: around €0.67 per kWh at a 150 kW fast charger in Antwerp.
Public charging is more expensive because charging station operators add a mark-up to the electricity price. With AC charging, the difference remains limited, but if you fast-charge often, it adds up quickly.
For comparison: for a Tesla Model 3 (14.4 kWh per 100 km) driving 20,000 km a year, the blog arrives at an annual cost of around €634 at the office, €1,152 at home, €1,210 for public AC and €1,930 for public DC.
Please note: these figures are indicative. Rates vary greatly per energy contract and per charge point.
Tips to save money
Charge at home or at work as much as possible to avoid the higher rates of public charge points.
Use a smart charging station. It lets you schedule your charging sessions, monitor your consumption and charge at the cheapest times. Features such as load balancing and peak shaving help you keep your consumption under control. More info: What are peak shaving and peak shifting?
Do you have solar panels? Then charge mainly when they produce the most.
Only use DC fast charging when you really need to, for example on long journeys. It is more expensive and can put strain on your battery in the long run.
